I've seen the "donuts on a rope". Forget exactly when, but around the mid to late 1990's I was working in a helicopter program and while flying near Edwards one day the pilot pointed out the contrail and asked if I had ever seen anything like it before. I hadn't. We both watched it until they faded away as it was something we'd never seen before and was so unique. It was very distinctive circles (for lack of a better description) with the "rope" connecting between them and evenly spaced out "donuts". No clue what it was, or even rumored to be, until long after we saw it. As I'd never heard the term before seeing it. We saw it one other time not too long after and never again.
