Between the two of us, we had over 30 years in aviation, and I would agree with you that almost all subsequent pictures I've seen online are what you describe. However, there have been a couple I've seen online over the years that were similar to what we saw on those two occasions. Would have loved to gotten a pic of it. Granted it was pre-cellphone camera days..the cellphone we had back then had a shoulder strap to carry it, HAH!
