Plus if the pilots in question were in their twenties at the time of the sighting these guys are now approaching retirement age now (or within 10 years either side).

Nobody will jeopardize their military pension discussing a classified project with civilians.

Whatever it was, it's likely still classified today or possible still classified and/or retired/scrapped given the time since then.
