Looks like ion propulsion is indeed widely used to keep satellites in their correct position in orbit. I was not aware of that. But so far conventional wisdom seems to be that it is only feasible in the vacuum of space. An ion propulsion drive that works efficiently in our atmosphere would be a major breakthrough.
