I've been thinking the same thing lately, and I've got another GPU on the way to more efficiently run some simulations I have in mind. Reason being, the one thing that makes me think it may not be an ion propulsion drone maneuvering in atmo is the maneuverability. I'm not entirely sure that even an advanced ion propulsion system has fraction of a second acceleration. So, start with a reasonable simulation and then push the parameters to see where it breaks down.
