I would assume the YF-24 wasn't a Red Hat asset, as those tended to be in the F-11X range, as you noted. I also think it was the reason that when the JSF had a down select for production, they just changed the X to an F. If they had gone in order, per regulations, then the X-35 would have become the F-25 and everyone would have been wondering why it wasn't the F-24.
