X-32 and X-35 were not designated as "YF" because they were concept demonstrators, not prototypes This distinction allowed truncated system/subsystem qual test programs since each of them were to be flown only approximately 100 hrs. Lots of us SMEs, both USAF and USN, fought this limited testing before first flight. The AF EIRT was very sporty.
