I don't know if many are aware but there is a program called the Civil Reserve Air Fleet (CRAF), whereby U.S. civilian air carriers assist USG, primarily USAF, in the mobility of personnel and equipment to various locations throughout the world. Heavy civilian transports (e.g. B747,DC10,B777) can often uplift more personnel including combat troops than military transport (e.g. C-17, C141, C5A). My former airline was a major participant in CRAF in support of Desert Storm and OIF (Operation Iraqi Freedom). USAF CRAF contracts are (or at least were) highly lucrative for the airlines.
