Never was?

The YF-24 project was akin to an advanced manned version of Rockwell HiMAT, a lego-like aircraft with varied bits added / removed / adapted to suit needs. It was Boeing's baby and part of their ICE work, and much of todays advanced thrust vectoring and tail-less work wouldn't have even been possible without it - 2D, 3D, unique shaped nozzles, all moving surfaces, adapted strakes - all of it went into the tunnel and elsewhere for testing.

If you look at the Boeing Bird of Prey and X-36 (as well as X-31), you will see parts of that effort on public display.
