Preparations and Tips before you come to Area 51
- Bring plenty of drinking water
- Check all fluids in your car, even (or especially) if it is a rental
- Check all your tires, including the spare tire
- Bring some essential tools to fix minor car problems or to change a tire
- Make sure that you have a map of the area
- Bring a pair of binoculars if you plan on watching the skies. 10x50 is a good size
- Bring your scanner, and check out our section with Area 51 scanner frequencies
- Bring sunglasses, sunscreen and a small flashlight for night observations
- Bring layered clothing and hiking shoes or good tennis shoes. They should be high enough to protect you from scorpions etc. Sandals are definitely not a good idea
- The temperatures can range from -20 in the winter to 110 in the summer. In the fall, daytime highs in the lower 80's and nighttime lows in the upper 10's are not uncommon. Bring appropriate clothing
- If you are planning to camp out bring a sleeping bag. Even in the summer some nights can be chilly out here
- If you plan on sleeping outside a cot will help keep critters (snakes, scorpions etc.) from getting too close to you
- Except for a small spot around the intersection of Groom Lake Road and Hwy. 375 there is no cell phone coverage in Tikaboo Valley. There is Verizon coverage around Rachel and in the surrounding parts of Sand Spring Valley. There is no pay phone in Rachel
- There is a small gas station in Rachel that sells regular unleaded gas only. If you need premium gas bring a can of octane booster. The next gas stations in either direction are 110 miles north in Tonopah or 50 miles south in Ash Springs and Alamo
- Hwy 375 is OPEN RANGE. Cattle frequently wander into the road. They are very hard to see at night. We have several accidents every year with tourists hitting cows. This never ends well, neither for the cow nor for the car. If you hit a cow you pay the rancher for it. Going the speed limit of 70MPH at night is WAY too fast.
