I have no experience with shortwave use of SDRs, so I hope that someone else can comment on that. But for the civilian and military air bands they are tremendously useful. I have tested a Uniden BCD-396T scanner vs an Airspy Mini SDR scanning the same frequencies in those bands with comparable antennas. The Airspy consistently catches more transmissions. It is, however, not as plug and play as a scanner where all you have to do is adjust the squelch. With an SDR it takes a while to figure out the setting for best performance.
