One reason I can think of is tanking support flying with the mission aircraft up until they are about to head into unfriendly territory, and they can tank up as close to the action as possible with a reduced risk of tipping off the bad guys. In a theater like the Pacific, with vast ranges between home and the target, having tank support up until you head in seems like a major advantage to me. This also increases the survivability likelihood on their way home.
