According to Peter Merlin's book (Can we just call it "The Book," capitalized from here on out? I feel like it's near canonized at this point.) Anyhow, according to the book, the 5+1 star stickers gained popularity with the Red Hat squadron (the US pilots testing "borrowed" Soviet MIGs) in the late 1970s. That same theme (5+1) stars has appears on unit/mission patches for numerous groups/projects over the past 40+ years. Trevor Paglen has a whole book full of them, and you can find many on this site.
