Don't fall into the trap of thinking that six stars (or even five plus one) always indicates Groom lake or Det 3. It frequently does, but not always. Another thing is that sometimes military units, AFROTC and CAP squadrons, civilian organizations, online gamers, paintballers, etc. will "borrow" elements from blackwork patches and use them in their own.

When you do see stars on a real Groom Lake patch, they may be in any number of combinations. Five and one is common, but it may be just six. The original Red Hats emblem featured an arc of six red stars. Were those intended to represent 5 and 1? I don't know. Symbology may evolve over time.
