Your speculation about the three 'other' aircraft cannot be attributed to either Prof. Czysz or Sandy McDonnell, just to be clear. The 1988 date is actually the latest date this conversation could possibly have happened (i.e. pre-retirement of Sandy) and likely happened some time before.
