Is the heat coming off the wing because there's power plants inside the wing to control the active features?

Are we sure there's only 1 airframe? The first and second photos in the linked article shows theres paint on the side of the cockpit thats not visible in the taxi spy shot. Maybe they just put it on for photos then took it off.
