Although Lockheed Martin's endorsement of development of the General Electric XA100 jet engine as the main engine for the NGAD led to speculation on this forum that Lockheed Martin might be the third man removed from the NGAD competition, Northrop Grumman's withdrawal from the bidding for an NGAD production contract duly reflects NG's preoccupation with the B-21 Raider and RQ-180 unmanned flying wing spyplane. Therefore, it'd be interesting to see if the USAF decides that series production of the F-35 won't deter Lockheed Martin from being declared the winner of the NGAD competition, especially because Lockheed Martin was able to handle its workload on early development and testing of service test F-35s in tandem with series production of the F-22.

If Boeing wins the NGAD contract, then its NGAD design will be christened the Ghoul because the St. Louis division of McDonnell Douglas (which was formerly the McDonnell Corporation and got bought out by Boeing along with the Long Beach division of McDD in 1997) had a tendency to name its jet fighters after evil spirits.
