So, if I'm putting together the pieces properly... Northrop was sitting fat and happy with the B-21 project coming their way, but threw their hat in the ring for NGAD, because of course you do... Their AF NGAD project didn't seem to be a favorite and they weren't too terribly concerned with that, given the contracts they already hold. And then the Navy blindsides them with a "Hey, NG, you know, we really like what you guys did for NGAD, why don't we beef up the landing gear and call it F/A-XX? Oh, and by the way, we need it yesterday.
