This article has some interesting implications to read between the lines.

Lockheed blindsides it's own partner, seemingly comes out in support of competitor, GE's AETP engine to replace F35'scurrent P&W engines.

This would extend the life and budget of the F35, and thus, theoretically, inversely take budget and immediacy away from the NGAD airframe project.

Some have posed a seemingly valid hypothesis that this may suggest Lockheed was actually the third man removed from the NGAD competition.

Note though that GE and P&W are both the frontrunners to develop the NGAD engine, so they both remain in the running, regardless.

at the very least, it exposes more of the dirty, petty politics, tricks and spite present in the industrial military complex
