The CIA still had a few projects going on at Area 51 during that time, but more significantly the Red Hats operation was really ramping up. Lots of technical and tactical exploitation with various MiG-17 and MiG-21 aircraft as well as testing of Soviet radar systems. Those programs just kept growing like crazy. John Lear loved to tell fanciful tales of "secret underground bases" with flying saucers. If asked, he would happily draw lines on maps to show exactly where they were located. Complete nonsense.
