John Lear wrote a paper in 1988 titled "The UFO Coverup" in which he claimed that Area 51 was closed for some period of time between 1972-1974 so that an underground portion could be built.

Opinions on John Lear and Groom Lake underground aside (please) I'm wondering if anyone with deep historical knowledge of the base could some any insight on that 1972-1974 timeframe. I'm lookin' at you, Peter Merlin!

Was there anything noteworthy happening in that timeframe that might invalidate the claims that it was closed?
