Not all the energy waves in the contrail generated by the SR-71's J58 engines in the photo you mention resemble blue diamonds because the energy waves produced by the afterburner exhaust that appear outside the silhouette of the SR-71 have a reddish tint. I'd be curious as to how many donuts-on-a-rope contrail sightings attributed to Aurora were recorded in the late 1980s and 1990s, because three SR-71s used by NASA in the 1990s were the only Blackbirds flying in 1990-1995, the period following the first retirement of the SR-71.
