McDonnell Douglas, and later Boeing, began exploring the potential of its blended wing body design to be used as a strategic airlifter and tanker transport back in the late 1990s, with either three of two engines (see photos of desktop models of the early military McDD/Boeing BWB designs on pages 338 and 339 of the book American Secret Projects 3: Airlifters Since 1962).
