I did not look at that link but as you suspect that claim is nonsense. The original runway was built into the lakebed and the northern end was prone to flooding after rains, when the lakebed becomes a shallow lake. Historic satellite images show the flood damage. There is no evidence of any cave-in of the ground.

Having underground facilities in that area makes zero sense due to flooding, lower terrain and the silty soil around the lakebed. IF they had a need for underground facilities (which as we have discussed repeatedly they do not) it would make a lot more sense to tunnel under Papoose Mountain. Gives them a lot more protection from ground penetrating radar.
