What if it is there to protect a sensitive paint or other surface coating from (ultraviolet) light?

Or a "sensor window" - which would link it up with the dicussion on laser-based communications that were going on here every now and then?

My memories of the US Southwest is that in winter it can be damn cold but always with a glaring blue sky ...
