If you look at the previous day there are two similar back and forth patterns across the NTTR and MOA further north. Take the three flights together and you get a "mowing the lawn" pattern. Although, granted, not as regular as other mapping flights I have seen. What I don't understand is why they did not gas up at an airport closer by and do all three back and forth passes in one flight instead of returning to Reno after every pass. That aircraft is registered to the DOI Office of Aviation Services. The responsibilities of that office include aviation safety and efficiency. Perhaps it was simply a survey of the restricted airspace. The office also deals with drones. I hope this is not in preparation of an extension of the drone no fly zone. I fought that successfully a couple of years ago but after the shenanigans of a certain irresponsible drone operator in this area I would not be surprised if this comes up again.
