Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and Wish a Happy Healthy New Year to All, God bless all those in uniforms of all types.
When I was training for my private the current single engine production piston aircraft had both a vacuum and electrical system. The vacuum pump spun the directional gyro, which tells us our heading. When taking the active runway we are trained to confirm and correct to the magnetic compass heading which is the runway number (RW 27 being heading 270 degrees) Vacuum pumps are known to fail and in instrument training the backup is the compass for heading guidance. There are also many older Piper Cub types with no electrical or vacuum systems available,a compass is all that is installed. Runway headings change all the time and will continue.
