Actually the separation at Area 51 is not new. The South Ramp was added for the CIA ops during the A-12 project, far away from the North Ramp which was primarily used by the Air Force. The space in between has filled up over the years. The same will happen eventually with the land between the two new ramps. The base is growing, and it is sandwiched between the runways and the Papoose Mountain range. Only one direction to grow.
