By no means necessary, but something i think is nice if you are going to use the search mode is a scanner that will search multiple bands sequencially. My newest handheld can search 138 to 144, 148 to 150.XXX (whatever it is, can't remember the top end) and 225 to 400 Mhz bands sequencially. With my older scanner i would have to set it to search one band for a while and then try another one for a while and so on. Always wondering if there was an active freq on one of the bands i wasn't searching at the time. Also if you are interested in the 138-144 and 148 to 150.xxx make sure you can set the mode to AM there.
