The effectiveness is very questionable as it took about twenty seconds (an eternity in a shooting engagement) to really cause sufficient damage. I'm sure against skin or something flammable the reaction would be quicker. However, this is a real good start as I'm sure lighting up the face of a Pirate Coxswain driving a boat full of bad guys would have an effect on his ability to steer.
