I have seen several seismic sensors in the area. They are usually much smaller, and don't have the two-unit setup. Some of the speculations we kicked around after finding it included a ground water monitoring station, or radiation monitoring. This still does not explain the need to keep the uplink unit separate from the sensor, though...
