If you buy refurbished, you can most likely get either a Nikon D-70 or Digital Rebel XT for around 500. If you're doing a digital SLR, I would recommend spending less money on your camera body and more on lenses (if you want to take good pictures of objects that are far away, you're going to want more than the standard 28-80mm zoom)
