That was my first impression too but I think the rancher would have recognized it. No powder burns or shot marks. There is a torque device on the flight simulator I work on that is similar but the plastic thing would not be strong enough. My only other guess (if it is an airplane part) is that it could be from an instrument as a torque limiting device, ie. an intentional weak spot. Still I think someone is going to identify it for sure as a non-airplane part. I remember the gadget I found when looking for 928 that I thought was from the cockpit that turned out to be a part of an ordinary flare. But that's what makes it fun. You find so many other unexpected things in the process.
