Yeager and Crossfield had an intense dislike for each other. This became intense when Crossfield managed to coax the Skyrocket past Mach 2 without it uncorking. Yeager soon tried to one up him by pushing the X-1A well past the point where the engineers said it would become catastrophically unstable. Yeager lived, but he proved the engineers were right.
