I can speak of White Sands a little bit. When I was there for a couple of days there was a huge amount of traffic. You could camp out on the sands and get a very good view, or if you go into town where the Space Musuem is: it overlooks the whole city and range, but it is a ways away from the base/range.
Unfortunately, I didn't have a scanner with me, but it was definitely an awesome experience and I plan on doing it again sometime. Also, the museum is definitely worth the time to check out.
