Well, contrary to Groom folklore the old runway is not really that long. Both main Groom runways are around 12,000 feet in length. The extension at the north end of the old runway is an emergency overrun that was at no time suitable for regular traffic. It was only designed to be used in case of a brake failure etc. Still, 12,000 feet is slightly longer than most runways at McCarran. Even the Janet 737's only need a little over half of that.
