My thought on the 3-engine design is that they may shut down the 2 outside engines when they need to get more stealthy, and use all three when they need the extra power. Al la the B2/B21 additional air intakes. Use 3 engines for takeoff/high speed/high AoA operations, and then being able to shield the intakes for the outside engines during times when higher degrees of stealth would be needed and they are able to operate simply off the single engine with the lower signature intake. I could be way off, but having a different intake for the middle engine seems curious if not used for something different than the side engines.
