I'm not denying that some of it was mass hysteria, but what about all the activity happening over military bases and even air traffic at regular airports being disrupted because of them. According to this article from the hill they even had to move all the F-22's at langley at one point because there were daily incursion by drones which they didn't think were being operated by random drone enthusiast. https://thehill.com/policy/defense/4937166-drone-flights-virginia-base/
