An SFO is a practice approach by a jet aircraft at idle thrust to a runway. The approach may start somewhere over the first third of the runway (High Key) at the point at which the pilot will start his turn and begin descent (if currently level) to final approach. The purpose of this approach is to simulate engine flameout. The SFO maneuver terminates in landing or low approach. The Low Key position is generally abeam the approach end of the runway. These "Key" positions serve as altitude and configuration reference points in order to ensure that the aircraft will be at the proper position, speed, and altitude over the end of the runway.
