The dry climate combined with extreme temperature fluctuations (I have seen -18F to 110F in Rachel) is hard on concrete and asphalt. Hwy 375 is being re-paved every few years because of cracks and potholes. In the case of our hwy they tend to go with the lowest bidder. And you get what you pay for.

On that note, the taxiway between the Janet ramp and the north ramp is currently being re-paved. Recent satellite images show the surface completely removed (see attached link).

On busy days there are 1,500+ people working at Area 51 with base housing able to accommodate almost as many.
