Local control vs remote (aka Nevada) control is more likley due to comm lag and situational awareness lag. They coined the term "loyal Wingman" for a reason. When encountering a fast-maneuvering target you'd rather have eyeballs in charge than someone half a world away. Comm security does not concern me. Datalinks have been secured by NSA-provided crypto for years without compromise (See my comments below about the RQ-170)
