The SR-71 Blackbird had slightly broader nose chines and a greater loaded weight than the Archangel-12, and it also differed in carrying not just optical/infrared cameras but also side-looking airborne radar and ELINT gathering systems, allowing it to carry more in the way of electronic spying equipment unlike the Archangel-12, not to mention that it could fly in the periphery of hostile territory. The Blackbird was informally dubbed "R-12" by Lockheed when first conceived in late 1962 when the USAF came to see that the Archangel-12's performance potential was much greater, which is why it was designed to be longer and carry more fuel and spying equipment than the A-12.
