Good point. I am not sure why, but I am pretty sure that I have heard radio traffic of what appear to be dissimilar aircraft at night before. Sight sensitivity could be a reason, both regarding outsiders and also uncleared base personnel. Mission objective could be another reason. Or simply an available range time slot.
