I think the use of J-58s for the SR-72 would be like J-75s being used for the early flights of the A-11 while J-58s changes were being finalized for use in the Blackbird.Using J-58s interim powerplants allows low speed flight testing of the SR-72 airframe and certification of the design up to the J-58s' maximum speed. Then you have an aircraft you can fly with confidence with the new engines are installed and higher speed flight is being explored.
