Well I dont know about that. Maybe if there was/is an "SR72" the darkstar could have been one of their designs, like this could be the "A-6" iteration of the A-12 design process.

I've linked an interesting instagram user Daniel Simon who was the digital designer who created darkstar. He shows multiple different designs leading into the darkstar. Now, he didnt create the darkstar, but rather (im guessing) he was hired for the movie to create the CGI renderings, and was sent designs by... I guess lockheed?
