If it's based at Groom and tested over the ocean, then it would have to fly over 29 Palms and the National Readiness Center and who knows what other desert training areas -- which would make perfect sense for these guys' reported sighting. Or if it's based at Vandenberg and was making a u-turn to head over to ... say Israel ... then it may fly over the desert at the way. I mean, I'd have assumed it would take the polar route and would have turned north out of Vandenberg, but maybe they'd sooner have it climbing and accelerating across the high-speed corridors and MOAs rather than over Portland? Just spitballing here.
