Once it was decided that the third crewmember was not necessary, all provision for the third seat were removed (except the hatch as discussed). What that did (serendipitously) was to make room for a cot so on long missions one crewmember could sleep (during A/R and other busy times both aircrew would be at the controls...leaving the seat for sleep or potty breaks was only allowed when the autopilot was engaged).
