The J58 began life as a derivative of the J91 turbojet and was initially intended to power the Convair F-106 Delta Dart, North American F-108, Convair B-58C, Vought XF8U-3 Crusader III, and North American A3J Vigilante. However, when analytical calculations of performance of the initial J58 design revealed problems at Mach 2.5, Pratt & Whitney ended up redesigning the J58 for Mach 3, except for the compressor and turbine aerodynamic definitions, so that the J58 itself would function reliably for prolonged periods of time at unprecedented temperatures.
