Boeing had a beautiful, extremely elegant solution to unmanned / autonomous air to air refueling: A trio of LIDAR that sat on the boom in an aerodynamic fairing, and a series of small reflective strips that sat on the receiving ramp.

All done in IR so as to be invisible to the naked eye.

Boom came down, UCAV went up, when the software got the hit, the boom took over the flight controls of the UCAV and sailed her into position.

That's near 20 years old now, give or take a few months.
