I remember reading many years ago, in connection with the Airbus A380, that the double decker approack rather than extra wide bodies allowed them to meet airline standard evacuation times. Studies at the time showed that very wide body seating arrangements meant it took longer to evacuate in an emergency. This will explain why the airlines are lukewarm at best on the idea of BWB planes.
